MY WORK

Teaching UX & Design Thinking

I crafted a 4-module online course on UX and Design Thinking, featuring practical and creative exercises, accompanied by a fictive case for hands-on UX practice.

Overview

From September to November 2022, I was tasked with planning, designing, and instructing a UX and Design Thinking course for working professionals. My employee aimed to enhance UX competence among consultants and incoming trainees.

Results

The course, presented as an internal competence booster at one of Sweden's largest consultancies, has been attended by over 40 individuals since its inception. Two additional sessions are in the pipeline. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, and I appreciate the kind words and encouragement from all the participants.

"Madeleine is a real gem! Engaged and enthusiastic like few others!"

"An outstanding course leader—exceptionally methodical and pedagogical."

"Excellent training with an exceptional teacher! I am highly pleased with the course."

Online, Interactive and Hands-On

Each module included 2-3 hands-on exercises, encouraging students to be active participants. This was appreciated and highlighted in the course evaluation.

Fictive Client and Case with the help of AI

To make the course easy to follow and establish real-world connections, I designed a fictive customer and case with some AI assistance. We continued to develop our designs for the fictive client throughout the course.

Encourage reflection and inspiration going forward

I always conclude each course with a 'Course Retro,' where we spend 15 minutes reflecting on the journey the students have just experienced and discussing what they want to continue learning going forward.

What I learned

Edit, edit, edit

Despite my desire to share all the knowledge, tips, and tricks, I had to make some tough decisions. Therefore, I iterated the course content based on feedback at the end of each session and my own reflections while reviewing the material at the start of each new course.

Doing my own thing

I have grown comfortable in my teaching style and interactions with both the material and participants. I don't attempt to emulate anyone else. Having engaged in significant speaking experiences and reviewed recordings, I stay mindful of what I say and do and consistently make an effort to pause and explain any terminology or words that may be new to participants before progressing to the next segment.

Improvisation

Expect things not to go according to plan—material in the wrong order, an exercise taking a bit longer, or a discussion almost extending beyond the intended time. As a facilitator, my most frequently employed skill is improvisation, all while remaining within the framework of the workshop setting.
